Hailee Steinfeld fans think her 'Wrong Direction' lyrics are about Niall Horan

Hailee Steinfeld opens up about being cheated on and hurt by an ex in her 'Wrong Direction' lyrics.
Hailee Steinfeld is back and fans are convinced that her 'Wrong Direction' lyrics are about her relationship with Niall Horan.
Hailee and Niall reportedly dated each other between February 2018 and December 2018. The two pop stars never publicly confirmed or denied if they were ever in a romantic relationship but they were spotted out together multiple times. Shawn Mendes also appeared to accidentally let slip that his two friends were an item in a red carpet interview.
Now Hailee appears to be opening up about Niall in her new single. Yesterday (Jan 1), Hailee released 'Wrong Direction' and fans believe that it's about Niall and the title of the song is a deliberate pun on the name of his band One Direction.
Are Hailee Steinfeld's 'Wrong Direction' lyrics about Niall Horan?
'Wrong Direction' is an emotional ballad about being cheated on and hurt by an ex. In the lyrics, Hailee sings: "Lookin' back, I probably should have known / But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin' alone". Hailee also directly calls out her ex for not being who he pretends to be: "Everyone thinks that you're somebody else / You even convinced yourself".
Hailee makes clear though that she isn't out for revenge. She explains: "I don't hate you / No, I couldn't if I wanted to / I just hate all the hurt that you put me through / And that I blame myself for letting you". It's raw and honest and heartbreaking. Similar to Selena Gomez's recent hit 'Lose You to Love Me', 'Wrong Direction' sees Hailee tell her story on her terms.

Naturally, it didn't take long for fans to assume that the song is about Niall. One fan tweeted: "why would hailee write a song called 'wrong direction' for it to not be about niall? we all know people made “wrong direction” jokes about 1D. plus saying “it doesn’t match his personality” is also not right since we all do not know him enough personally to claim that."
People have also been calling out Niall fans attacking Hailee for expressing herself. One person wrote: "If Wrong Direction is really about Niall, let him take that L. There’s no reason to justify or make excuses. Not everyone is perfect. We don’t know what goes on in his personal life so those who think Hailee is lying have no room to judge her."

In a statement about the song, Hailee revealed: "I've learned how easy it is to fall in love with the idea of falling in love. And more importantly how hard it can be to accept the reality of losing yourself in someone else's version of the word. I wrote this song at a low point in my life, when I realised I had spent a year falling in a direction so far from who I was."
As it stands, Hailee hasn't commented on who the song is about. We shall update you if she does.
Hailee Steinfeld - 'Wrong Direction' lyrics
VERSE 1
I don't hate you
No, I couldn't if I wanted to
I just hate all the hurt that you put me through
And that I blame myself for letting you
Did you know I already knew?
PRE-CHORUS
Couldn't even see you through the smoke
Lookin' back, I probably should have known
But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin' alone
CHORUS
Loved me with your worst intentions
Didn't even stop to question
Every time you burned me down
Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven
Loved me with your worst intentions
Painted us a happy ending
Every time you burned me down
Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven
POST-CHORUS
And it's so gut-wrenchin'
Fallin' in the wrong direction
VERSE 2
On my tip-toes
But I still couldn't reach your ego
Guess I was crazy to give you my body, my mind
Don't know what I was thinkin' 'til now
Everyone thinks that you're somebody else
You even convinced yourself
PRE-CHORUS
Couldn't even see you through the smoke
Lookin' back, I probably should have known
But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin' alone
CHORUS
Loved me with your worst intentions
Didn't even stop to question
Every time you burned me down
Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven
Loved me with your worst intentions
Painted us a happy ending
Every time you burned me down
Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven
POST-CHORUS
And it's so gut-wrenchin' (Ooh, ooh)
Fallin' in the wrong direction (Ooh, ooh)
How did you sweep me right off my feet?
Baby, I can't keep (Fallin' in the wrong direction)
How did you sweep me right off my feet?
Right off my feet
PRE-CHORUS
Couldn't even see you through the smoke
Lookin' back, I probably should have known
But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin' alone
CHORUS
Loved me with your worst intentions
Didn't even stop to question (No)
Every time you burned me down (Me down)
Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven
Loved me with your worst intentions
Painted us a happy ending (Ooh)
Every time you burned me down (Me down)
Don't know how; for a moment, it felt like heaven
POST-CHORUS
And it's so gut-wrenchin'
Fallin' in the wrong direction
