The 1975’s ‘Be My Mistake’: The emotional meaning behind the lyrics of the ‘A Brief Inquiry…’ ballad

The lyrics and meaning behind The 1975's new song 'Be My Mistakes' from the new album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships has left fans feeling hella emotional.
The 1975 have finally released their long-awaited third studio album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships and it absolutely slaps.
The album, which is the first instalment of the 'Music for Cars' era (part two called Notes on a Conditional Form will be coming at some point in 2019), dropped today (Nov 30) and it's already sent fans spiralling into pits of aesthetically pleasing sadness. In fact, there's one track in particular that seems to have everyone in their feelings and it's called 'Be My Mistake'.
'Be My Mistake' is almost like an even sadder sequel to 'Somebody Else' and it will one hundred percent destroy you emotionally. Yeah, it really is THAT ballad. 14/10, although... would not recommend listening to them back to back unless you wanna cry yourself to sleep for the next month.
But what does the song mean? What's it about? And who is it about?
Speaking to Pitchfork, Matty revealed that 'Be My Mistake' is "just about guilt".
"It’s about when you are a young person and you struggle sometimes to figure out what you really want. And sometimes, like a lot of things, it requires you to make a mistake before you actually understand what you have," he revealed. "And then maybe you push people away, and then you realise that the idea of a casual relationship with somebody is just not really something that you want."
The track is mostly just him and a guitar, stripped back. Matty said that he wanted "people to feel personally addressed. If you’re going to tell the truth like that, you can’t dress it up."
The song is undoubtably the most emotional track on the album - some fans are even calling it the band's most beautiful song of all time. Basically, the song is reducing everyone to tears and everyone is in their feelings.
be my mistake is the most beautiful song the 1975 have ever produced and that’s the tea

There's even one lyric in particular that's got everyone talking too. In the second verse, Matty sings "You make me hard but she makes me weak," which is insanely poetic and also, like, really really unromantically romantic - as one Twitter user perfectly described it.
Seriously, when will the band release their long-awaited book of short form poetry? It's what we all deserve.
“you make me hard but she makes me weak” matty is the king of being unromantically romantic

Honestly, they might be right. 'Be My Mistake' might just be one of The 1975's best songs of all time. Read the full lyrics here.
