Shawn quickly set the record straight following his mistake.
We've all been there, scrolling down our Twitter timeline using our thumb when we accidentally hit the 'like' button on a tweet we didn't even mean to 'like'. Sounds like the same thing happened to Shawn Mendes recently when fans noticed that he'd 'liked' a transphobic tweet and proceeded to call him out on it.
Shawn Mendes and Niall Horan confirm new collaboration and it sounds iconic
We won't share the meme here because it's... well... it's transphobic but once fans saw the tweet in his 'likes' tab, they started tweeting him, with some asking him to explain why he'd liked it and others telling him to straight up delete it.
A few minutes after people started @-ing him, Shawn acknowledged the mistake, apologised, un-liked the tweet and responded to the fans, writing, "Must of accidentally liked it scrolling down a feed, you know me & I’d never. Sorry."

Shawn then followed up on his apology with a quick message to his fans, tweeting "Love u".

While it was fair of fans to call him out on the offensive tweets that he'd 'liked', others defended him pointing out that he didn't need to answer fans who were so quick to cancel him and call him out.
Clearly, it was important to Shawn to set the record straight and he was more than happy to respond and listen to the fans who had spoken up.
You don’t have to apologize for something you know you didn’t mean to do just cause somebody has to be so hasty about it. It’s so sad some people take advantage of people’s kindness and taken for granted. I’m so sorry we love you Shawn so much even your mistakes. #JFCShawnMendes

Shawn, of course, has always been supportive of the LGBTQ community so it was probably quite startling for his fans when the tweet appeared in his 'likes'. Shawn also urged others to open their minds and become more educated when producer Teddy Geiger transitioned last year, saying, "just open your eyes and open your mind, because, for me, going through one of my closest friends going through a very big transition period in her life, was incredible to watch."
Fair play to Shawn for acknowledging the unfortunate mistake and apologising.
