Halsey said "It's a miracle I haven't killed myself yet" in the profile.

Halsey has explained her remarks about killing herself in a new interview with Billboard magazine.

Yesterday (Aug 8), Billboard spoke to Halsey about her third studio album, turning 25 and her recent activism. Halsey reveals that 'Nightmare' won't feature on her upcoming LP, she talks about growing out of her "internalised misogyny" and she also touches on how much working with Planned Parenthood means to her: "I go to bed and wake up thinking the same thing: thinking about how I can change the world. Hopefully, I never lose that."

Billboard ran the piece with a quote about suicide and now Halsey has clarified what she meant.

In the video, Halsey says: "This is controversial… I’m going to be 25 and it’s a miracle I haven’t killed myself yet. I hope I can get married soon, but in the meantime, I hope I can fuck as many people as I can." She goes on to add: “I’m going to be 25 in two months. I’m a quarter of century old. I didn’t think I was going to be alive that long."

Halsey then explains: "I grew up in a world where being 25 [meant] having three kids and being in a shitty relationship or I was going to be dead because young people with bi-polar disorder who grow up with no resources don’t usually end up thriving at 25.”

Billboard ran the interview with pull-quote: "It's a miracle I haven't killed myself yet" and now Halsey has tweeted to explain that her words shouldn't all be taken at face value. "I did a really awesome in-depth interview today about music and existentialism within the millennial identity and billboard pulled the quote “it’s a miracle I haven’t killed myself yet” as the headline."

She ended the tweet writing: "stan twitter humor ain’t really connecting in the real world."

Halsey previously told Billboard in 2016 that she did try to commit suicide as a teenager and was sent to a psychiatric ward. "I had tried to kill myself. I was an adolescent; I didn’t know what I was doing. Because I was 17, I was still in a children’s ward. Which was terrifying. I was in there with 9-year-olds who had tried to kill themselves.”

Since then Halsey has continued to speak candidly about her mental health and taken part in a suicide prevention campaign called 'I'm Listening' for World Suicide Prevention day.
