A teenager boy is in hospital this morning, after a van drove over the tent he was in near the village of Barlby.

North Yorkshire Police said the teenager was camping in a field by the River Ouse with a group of friends when he was hit by the van.

Officers were called to the scene near the village of Barlby at 3.55am on Sunday.

Police said a man had threatened to mow down their tent. Most of the group escaped and hid but one boy stayed inside the tent and was run over.

Det Ch Insp Heather Pearson said: "This is a disturbing incident which has resulted in a teenager sustaining serious injuries.

"It is vital that we obtain as much information as possible of the events leading up to the incident."

She asked for anyone who saw a white van in the area late on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday to contact police.

The boy remains in a serious but stable condition in York District Hospital.

A local man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.
