Investigating Officer DS Gary Lyons of Newport DCID said:
"This is a very unusual crime in the amount of violence used and occurred in a quiet residential area.
"This would have been a very frightening ordeal for the victim and I am appealing for anyone with any information about this incident to come forward. Were you in the area at the time? Did you see anyone matching the description hanging around the area or making their way from the scene?
"The stolen handbag is still missing, if you spot it please contact the police first and do not handle it.
"I would also like to appeal to anyone with private CCTV in the area to speak to us as this may help with our enquiries into identifying the suspect."
