Woman Hurt In Dog Attack On Southampton Common

A woman's needed hospital treatment after being attacked by a dog on Southampton Common.

It happened at around midday on Thursday 5 March near to the children's play area.

The victim, a 57-year-old woman was walking her dog on the common when a Staffordshire Bull Terrier came up to them.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was not on a lead and attacked the victim's dog which was on a lead.

Whilst attempting to protect her dog, the victim was bitten on her hand causing a serious injury which required hospital treatment.

The owner of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is described as a woman in her 30s with black hair and of a large build. She was wearing a blue rain coat. She had three children with her and an older woman.

The dog was wearing a leather harness with studs on.

PC Adam McLean said:

"This incident happened near to the children's play area and the victim could easily have been a small child.

"A man who was walking in the park came to the aid of the victim but didn't leave his name.

"We would like to speak to this man as he may be able to help us with our enquiries. We'd also like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the incident or recognises the description of the owner and the dog."
