Police are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Old Westminster Lane, Newport in the early hours of Saturday morning (3rd March).
The victim, from Newport, had left Yates’s bar in High Street at 12.30am and began to walk up High Street when she met an unknown man who offered to walk her home.
The pair walked towards the Sainsbury’s building site and along Old Westminster Lane towards Wilver Road.
It was in Old Westminster Lane where the offender forced himself onto the victim and sexually assaulted her.
The victim was able to push him away and ran into Wilver Road where she was able to contact police.
The offender is described as:
Male
White
Aged in his early to mid 20s
Medium build
Light brown/blond hair
Wearing a dark coloured zip-up top, possibly with a hood.
Police are now appealing for anyone who saw the pair or who heard anything in the vicinity of Old Westminster Lane and Wilver Road, to call as soon as possible.
DC Victoria Hayward said: “This was a frightening experience for the victim who has been left very shaken by what happened.
“Thankfully incidents such as this are very rare on the island, but never-the-less our advice would always be to never walk home late at night alone, never except lifts or offers of company from those you do not know, and if possible tellsomeone what time they can expect you home.”
Witnesses to the incident are asked to call DC Victoria Hayward at Newport police on 101.
