Russell Crowe Filming In Winchester

Hollywood A-Listers are in Winchester today (Thursday April 19th) to shoot scenes for the Hollywood blockbuster Les Miserables - the movie version of the famous musical.

An area of the city near Winchester College has been transformed into 19th century Paris for the night scenes. Streets being used include College Street, Symonds Street, College Walk, Cathedral Close and St Swithun Street.

The film also stars Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter. It's not known if any of the other celebs will be in the city for the shoot, although some were there two weeks ago when other scenes were filmed at The Chantry at Winchester College.

The director is Tom Hooper, who also made The King's Speech. The film's due for release in January 2013.

Portsmouth Naval Base has also been used as a location for filming; Hugh Jackman was even spotted eating out in Jamie Oliver's restaurant at Gunwharf Quays.

It's reported the crew are using St Catherine's Park and Ride at Bar End as a base.

Russell (who plays Inspector Javert in the movie) has tweeted this afternoon to say: @russellcrowe citizens of Winchester are Wintonians...who knew?Patrolling your streets tonight, do not harbour fugitives, the law will not be mocked #lesmis
