Firefighters have been tackling a "significant'' blaze which broke out in a building at a crematorium in Edinburgh.

Crews were called to the scene at Mortonhall Crematorium in Edinburgh at around 6.45pm last night.

More than 35 firefighters were involved in bringing the blaze in the roof space of one of the buildings under control in "challenging conditions'', the brigade said.

There were no workers or members of the public in the building at the time of the blaze.

Fire crews remained on site through the night to make the building as safe as possible.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "The council are currently assessing the impact of the fire on the regular operations of the site and any concerned members of the public should contact them directly.''
