A 90-year-old woman has died after being struck by a bin lorry in Edinburgh.

The pensioner was hit by the eastbound vehicle on Piersfield Terrace, near Northfield Broadway, at around 11.30am on Friday.

The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Police Scotland said.

Road policing officers and the other emergency services attended and the road was closed for around five hours to allow investigations to be carried out at the scene.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help with the ongoing inquiry.

Sergeant Ross Drummond, of the force's road policing unit, said: "This collision has resulted in the death of a woman and our thoughts and condolences are with her friends and family at this difficult time.

"Our inquiries into the full circumstances of the collision are ongoing and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed it, and has not yet spoken to officers, to come forward and assist our investigations.

"Equally, anyone with any information relevant to the inquiry is asked to contact us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 1360 of Friday March 30.
