An elderly woman is fighting for her life after being struck by a car in Glasgow city centre.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Jamaica Street and Midland Street at about 1.15pm on Tuesday after reports a pedestrian was hit by a white Mercedes.

The 84-year-old was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where her condition is described as critical.

Police Scotland have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Constable Elaine Scott said: "Jamaica Street was busy with members of the public at the time of the incident and it is important that anyone with information that could assist our enquiries comes forward.

"I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed what happened, or observed a white Mercedes on the road prior to the incident."
