A 10-month-old baby has been bitten in the face by a dog in South Ayrshire.

A mother was carrying her baby girl in a push chair when she stopped to open a gate to go into a house in Barclaugh Drive, Coylton, on Monday morning.

While she opened the gate, a small black dog appeared from a wooded area, known locally as the Sundrum area, and bit the girl before running off, police said.

The baby was taken to Ayr Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for treatment to facial injuries.

Officers said the dog did not have a collar and there was no owner around.

Constable Gerard MacLean said: "Officers have been carrying out enquiries in the local area to try and establish where this dog has come from.

"The dog did not have a collar on at the time and was not in the company of its owner.

"I would appeal to anyone who either witnessed the incident or has seen a small black dog in the area to get in touch.

"Anyone with information can contact officers at Ayr police office on 101.''
