Two women have died and another is critically ill in hospital after three cars crashed in Shotton Colliery.
It happened at 6:05pm last night (Sunday 23rd June) on Front Street.
A Fiat 500 and MG ZR were travelling east along Front Street towards Peterlee when they crashed into a Citroen Xsara which was heading in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Fiat, 18-year-old Rebecca Learoyd, and the driver of the Citroen, 60 year old Anne Peachey,(pictured), died in the crash.
Mrs Peachey's daughter and granddaughter, who were passengers in the Citroen, were also injured.
They are being treated at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Police said post-mortem examinations for the three victims would be held later this week.
Officers have appealed for anyone with information about the crash to contact them.
A 22-year-old man from Wingate who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on police bail until mid-July pending further enquiries.
