A march and rally involving a number of groups protesting against national and local spending cuts is planned for Newcastle city centre.

In November Newcastle City Council announced cuts of £90m and more than 1,300 job losses spread over three years.

Services likely to be affected include libraries, swimming pools and children's services.

The 'Save Our Services' Group are staging a protest march against the planned cuts.

Northumbria Police have been working with the protest organisers to make sure it passes off without too much disruption.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Ashman said:
"We're expecting an entirely peaceful and good natured event but we are aware of the potential impact on the local business community and general public and will try to keep disruption to a minimum.

Northumbria Police has worked with all the protesting parties and we expect everyone involved to respect the rights of others on the day. It is the responsibility of the groups involved to ensure they act in a peaceful manner and we will only intervene if this is not the case."

Those taking part in the event are being asked to consider their travel plans in advance, in particular the Metro system is expected to be closed between Byker and North Shields on the day and a replacement bus service will be running.

A number of road closures will be in place around lunch time on Saturday for the event which is scheduled to start at 12pm at the Centre for Life travelling through Newcastle to finish at The Monument.
