The AA says a potential 83 jobs could go at their main call centre for AA Insurance in Newcastle.
The motoring organisation has told Capital their North East branch employs 1,064 people.
The AA says it's likely to cut 300 mainly back office jobs overall and create 50 new roles under investment plans.
They claim the re-organisation is through investment in more technology, as more people are buying their insurance cover online.
It says no detailed plans have been finalised, but a review of the business has been taking place since last summer.
Bob Mackenzie, Executive Chairman of the AA said;
“It is our intention to continue to serve the needs of the motorist as comprehensively as possible.
Our plan is to strengthen the relationships we have with our 13 million customers and members by offering an enhanced experience.
In achieving this objective, there will be a benefit to all our stakeholders.”
