Why is Free Megan Thee Stallion trending? The controversy with her label explained

Who is Megan Thee Stallion signed to? 1501 Certified Entertainment are allegedly blocking Megan from releasing new music after she tried to renegotiate her contract with them.

Megan Thee Stallion has claimed that her record label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, are blocking her from releasing music.

Last night (Mar 1), Megan Thee Stallion took to Instagram Live to call out 1501 Certified Entertainment for allegedly stopping her from putting out new music. Chatting to her fans, Megan explained: "When I signed, I didn't really know what was in my contract. I was young. I think I was like 20 and I ain't know everything that was in that contract."

Megan then revealed that she tried to renegotiate her contract with 1501 but they weren't having it. She said: "It just all went bad. It all went left. So now they’re tellin’ a bitch that she can’t drop no music.”

#FreeMeg and #FreeTheStallion then began trending on social media and now Megan has explained her situation even further.

Megan added: "Megan Thee Stallion was Megan Thee Stallion before I even got over there. I been rapping, been freestyling, been doing me, been Meg. It's a greedy game." She continued: "Y'all don't see music from Megan Thee Stallion, it's 'cause 1501 don't want to drop that new music and that shit real crazy."

After someone on Twitter called Megan out for not reading her contract properly, she tweeted back: "It’s not that I literally didn’t read it it’s that I didn’t understand some of the verbiage at the time and now that I do I just wanted it corrected".

Megan also began retweeting fan tweets calling to free her.

It's unclear exactly what the specifics of the contract are that Meg wants to renegotiate. However, it's sadly commonplace in the industry for young artists to be encouraged to sign contracts that put them in uncompromising situations later on in their careers.

Taylor Swift and JoJo, for example, have both been blocked from performing and releasing new music by their old labels, all because of contracts they signed as children.

Unfortunately, if Megan signed a contract with 1501, it's unlikely that she will be able to successfully renegotiate it unless the label is willing. Fingers crossed that they can come to some sort of solution because Megan deserves the right to be able to release her own music on her own terms.

As it stands, 1501 are yet to publicly respond to Megan's claims. We shall keep you informed with any updates.
