Human remains found under the M60 in Stockport have been identified as belonging to missing Sale Dad, Vinny Derrick.
Police were called to an area under the M60 on Wednesday, near junction 3, following reports of human remains being found.
A forensic odontologist has been able to identify the remains as those of Vinny Derrick, using dental records.
Vinny went missing during a works night out in Manchester city centre in the early hours of 30 August 2003.
The scene continues to be examined and there is likely to be a police presence at the location for several days.
At this time it is not known how Vinny died or if there are any suspicious circumstances.
Detective Chief Inspector Sara Wallwork, of Stockport CID, said:
"Vinny’s family have spent more than eight painful years wondering what happened to him and we have specially trained officers supporting them at this difficult time.
"I am aware that they will have many more questions that need answering and we will work as quickly as we can to provide them.
"We are expecting to be at the scene throughout Friday and possibly beyond: the work that needs to be done cannot be rushed and must be done carefully and with integrity.
"After that we need to establish how Vinny died and came to be at the location. These are difficult and complex inquiries and I want to stress that while we will carry these out as quickly as possible, it could take some time.
"We will be keeping Vinny’s family and the local community updated throughout and I would also ask that anyone who has any information that could be of assistance to this investigation to please call us."
