A 23-year-old man from Stockport is being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder and rape after a woman was attacked in Manchester.
A member of the public found the 27 year old extremely distressed and with serious injuries near the Park in Gorton at around 1.20am on Sunday 1 July 2012.
The victim told police she had been subjected to a violent rape sometime between 12.30am and 1.20am near the canal path by the lower reservoir.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Bridge from GMPs Public Protection Division said: "We have made an arrest, but the investigation continues. We are asking for any witnesses that may have been in the area around this time to come forward.
"This incident caused genuine alarm in the community and it is to that community that we are now turning for answers."
"I am urging anyone who may have seen a young woman around the canal path area between 12.30am and 1.20am on Sunday morning, 1 July, or who may have seen anyone else hanging around or acting suspiciously in this area, to please get in touch with us."
