Man Admits Killing Birmingham Student In Crash

A Black Country man has admitted dangerous driving after a crash which killed a Birmingham student stood at a bus stop.

21-year-old Rebecca McManus was waiting for a bus in Hagley Road West on May 31 last year when Sukvinder Mannan's Mitsubishi careered into the bus stop.

She was waiting to travel into the city for a friend's hen do, but died at the scene. 

A friend, also 21, was seriously hurt and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. 

Rebecca had just finished a three-year English Literature and Creative Writing degree at the University of East Anglia and was due to graduate the following month.

Mannan, aged 33, was taken into custody and later charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

A second man, Inderjit Singh, of Cranbourne Avenue, Ettingshall Park, Wolverhampton was also charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

Singh, aged 30, is alleged to have been driving a second car which was travelling along Hagley Road West at the same time as Mannan’s Mitsubishi when it collided with the bus stop.

Mannan, of Roundhills Road, Halesowen, also faced a charge of failing to provide a blood sample following the crash, while computer engineer Singh faces a separate count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Mannan today appeared before Wolverhampton Crown Court where he entered a guilty plea to all counts. He's been bailed until sentencing on a date to be fixed. 

The case against Singh has been adjourned for further reports and a hearing has been set for 18 May.
