An investigation is underway after a man attempted to abduct a 10-year-old schoolgirl in a park in Wolverhampton.

West Midlands Police were alerted after a male approached the girl in Wednesfield Park shortly after 3.30pm on Wednesday.

The man, described as white, slim, and wearing a blue zip top and joggers, asked if the youngster wanted to see his dog.

When the girl declined, the man grabbed her by the straps of her bag.

She managed to escape uninjured before running off and telling her parents.

Sgt Neil Western, from the force's CID team, said: "I am asking for anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area to speak to us, if they have not already done so.

"We have stepped up neighbourhood patrols in the area and we are working with local schools to ensure pupils are safe.

"If you can help in any way, please speak to us."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
