Birmingham Man Avoids Jail After Runaway Van Kills A Woman

A man's avoided a jail sentence after his van rolled off a pub car park ploughing into a woman in Warwickshire.

Susan Collins died from her injuries after the van had been parked in Southam without the handbrake on properly.

23-year-old Matheeb Iqbal from Lozells has got a suspended sentence.

The Mercedes Sprinter van rolled down onto Coventry Street and hit Susan Collins She suffered serious injuries and died in hospital on 8 January 2015.

Iqbal pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was given a 30 week suspended sentence, 200 hours of community service and a 12 month driving ban.

Sergeant Jem Mountford who was involved with the investigation said: "Iqbal's actions on that day left Susan's family heartbroken and without a mother. Everytime we get behind the steering wheel, we need to remember the potential consequences that driving without due care and attention can have. Hopefully Friday's decision will ensure that justice has been done and that the family can now begin to have closure on this devastating incident."
