North Yorkshire Police say a 39 year old woman has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and fraud.

It's understood to be 39 year old Rachel Hewitt from Selby.

North Yorkshire Police would not confirm or deny if the woman was a police officer but did say she was on a career break.

An article in the Sun newspaper claims the arrest relates to allegations she lied about her daughter having cancer then spent the money raised by her colleagues.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "We can confirm that a 39-year-old woman was arrested by officers from North Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Unit on Monday 10 October 2011.

She was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and fraud.

The woman has been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.

As this is an ongoing investigation it is inappropriate to comment further."
