Grandparents Fear For Train Girl

The parents of a man killed by a train near Doncaster say they are "gravely concerned" about their three-year-old granddaughter who was also hit.

Richard Straw and his daughter, who has not been named, were hit by a train reported to be travelling at up to 100mph on a stretch of track north of Doncaster on Monday.

The girl was airlifted to Sheffield Children's Hospital, while Mr Straw, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His parents said in a statement: "We are devastated by the loss of our son Richard and remain gravely concerned for the welfare of our granddaughter, who is still in a critical condition in hospital.

"The family would like to thank everyone for their help and support. This is a very difficult, sad and distressing time for us all and we would request the media allow us to come to terms with what has happened.

"Richard was much loved by his family and friends.''

British Transport Police (BTP) said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident which happened close to a foot crossing on an isolated stretch of the line between Adwick and Bentley stations.

The train involved was the 10.35am King's Cross to Leeds service.

Investigators are continuing to try to find out how and why Mr Straw, from Bentley, and his daughter got on to the tracks.

A BTP spokesman said: "BTP officers are preparing a file for the coroner. Officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.''
