30 August 2011, 11:21

Health and safety officials are investigating after a grandmother and granddaughter suffered serious injuries when they were thrown from a fairground ridein Bridlington.

The 58-year-old woman and the four-year-old girl were flipped from the Jungle River log flume on the seafront on Sunday.

Medics from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance airlifted the woman to hospital following the incident, which is believed have occurred when the log flume jammed.

Horrified crowds watched as the accident in Bridlington happened at 3.28pm.

Witnesses described seeing the ride jam on its rails then restart, 'flipping' the pair from the carriage.

Rescuers from Bridlington Coastguard worked to clear enough space in the crowd for the air ambulance helicopter to land.

Cllr Cyril Marsburg, the mayor of Bridlington, said:

'The lady and her granddaughter were on the log flume water splash.

'It came down there and was no water there. It hit the bottom and they were both thrown out.

'It was a sunny day and it was very busy on the seafront. People were horrified when they saw what was going on.

'I'm quite surprised there was no safety belts on the ride; had there been, they would not have been thrown out.'

A Humberside Police spokeswoman said the woman and child were visiting the resort from South Yorkshire when the accident happened.

The 58 year old was taken by air ambulance to Hull Royal Infirmary and later transferred to Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham.

The four-year-old girl, who suffered gashes to her leg, was taken to Scarborough Hospital and later transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary.

Police said neither victim had life threatening injuries.

The spokeswoman said the inquiry into the accident would be led by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), with assistance from police.
