Fisherman From York Swept Into Sea Dies

A York man has died after being swept into the sea at Redcar.

The 64-year-old was plucked from the water at South Gare in Redcar and taken to hospital but later died, Cleveland Police said.

A member of the public raised the alarm at about 3.40pm yesterday as a lifeboat crew and other emergency services rushed to the scene.

A 63-year-old man from York who was also swept into the sea, managed to get back to land and was taken to the James Cook University Hospital suffering from hypothermia. He was released after treatment.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and further details about the dead man would not be released.

It was reported that the pair had been fishing at the mouth of the River Tees yesterday with nearby sea conditions described as poor with a strong south-east swell.
