MONDAY'S CLUE EXPLAINED
"This is where the Dragon, Bull and Lion live with a Ferryboat, Fortified at the end of a ridge. The Lord's gift of land is still in use - but Stan didn't stay there."
The Dragon, Bull, Lion and Ferryboat are all pubs that are over 200 years old in the town. Part of the 'Mexborough' name is Old English for 'fortified place' and the town sits at the North East end of a dyke called Roman Ridge.
Lord Montagu gave the land for Montagu Hospital, which is still there and still in use - and Stan Laurel stayed at the Montagu Arms in 1907, not the hospital.
Congratulations to Julie from Mexborough who is our first finalist!
TUESDAY'S CLUE EXPLAINED
"The Roman's would put you in a Mojito. But you mix something different with your waters. Eleven arches sit close to that of Mere special interest."
The town was founded by the Romans who named it Calcaria from the latin word for Lime (which you would put in a mojito). Tadcaster has long been associated with breweries because of the quality of their local waters.
The eleven arches make up the viaduct above the River Wharfe – and Tadcaster Mere is a designated ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ because it’s part of a huge former lake basin.
Congratulations to Michelle from Doncaster who is our second finalist!
WEDNESDAY'S CLUE EXPLAINED
"Vinnie now flogs what Michael first started, but he’s not doing trade with any shoddy gear. These famous ladies are addicted to crumpets. "
Michael Spedding’s small business would become Fox’s biscuits. Vinnie is the Fox’s Biscuit mascot on TV ads. Batley was also the centre for the ‘Shoddy’ wool trade, which involves mixing old and new wool.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus made the Batley Ladies Townswomen’s Guild famous, Robert Palmer was born there – one of his biggest songs was ‘Addicted to Love’ and the Batley Frontier was briefly named The Crumpet.
Congratulations to Kim from Grimsby who is our third finalist!
THURSDAY'S CLUE EXPLAINED
"Go five back to best afford the affluence. Or kick it with Paul for some old school grammar. A white horse dimly guides you to market festivals."
Go back five years to 2007 and Beverley was named as the best place to live in the United Kingdom in an "Affordable Affluence" study by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Beverley is also home to the oldest grammar school in the country, England and Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson went there.
The famous pub in the town, The White Horse is dimly lit by authentic gas lighting and is better known as "Nellie's". The town is known for it’s market on a Saturday, which is also the venue for a number of festivals each year.
Congratulations to Harriet from Beverley who is our last finalist!
