After a long held ambition of St David’s Hospice Care to stage a City of Newport Half Marathon, we are now approaching our 3rd event. In 2013 it became a reality with over 1,000 participants, and in 2014 Admiral joined to become the main sponsor for the event with over 1,300 participants. In 2015 early comments about the route have been accommodated and we look to recruit upwards of 2,000 runners. By working with our partners and ‘The City of Newport Council’ we are bringing increased road closures and an even better route, showcasing some of the best sights around Newport with a circular route to Caerleon, following the River Usk back to the Riverfront. Like most large events, our changing City, has obstacles to overcome, but we endeavor to make it the best possible all-round experience for the runners and for visiting spectators, the course features ‘hot spot’ locations for the best race views.

The St David’s team, along with its partners and Newport City Council, has devised a new route, with increased road closures, showcasing some of Newport’s top sights. The new route starts in Chartist Square and finishes at the Riverfront Theatre. It follows a scenic route along the Riverfront path, past iconic bridges and on up towards Newport Castle before heading out to Caerleon and back.

If you’re not marathon fit, why not volunteer to help out? As the race is for charity, volunteers are welcomed with open arms.
You could be a safety marshal, or you could hand out essential water at one of the many water stations along the race route. Bucket collectors, musicians, entertainers and crowd cheerers are more than welcome to come along and help to raise much needed funds for St David’s Hospice Care.

This year’s race falls on Sunday March 1, so you could run the race as a daffodil or leek, as a coal pit miner or even a red dragon. If you’re not running in the race, why not bake traditional welsh cakes to help raise money!

For more information give the St David’s team a call on 01633 851051, email  fundraising@stdavidshospicecare.org Or visit the official website where you will find the entry ‘link’ and downloadable map of the route to help you train.

St David’s Hospice Care:

st davids

St David's Hospice Care has been providing community-based hospice care for people with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses, and their families, since 1979. Our care is provided to people living within Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen and within certain areas of South and Mid Powys. In June 2013 St David’s Hospice Care took over the management of St Anne’s Hospice which means that, should the need arise, our patients can receive care in the in-patient hospice in Newport.
