Sixty Firefighters Tackle Fire In Totton

Fire breaks out at Lulworth Business Centre in Totton - up to 60 firefighters tackled the flames.

At 01:31hrs this morning [20 January 2012] Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a fire at an industrial unit at Lulworth Business Centre, Nutwood Way in Totton.

A total of 60 firefighters were in attendance to tackle the fire at the premises which operates as an industrial dry cleaner.

Control operators mobilised eight fire appliances and support vehicles to the scene.  Including: one fire appliance from Totton, one fire appliance and the aerial ladder platform from Redbridge, one fire appliance from Lyndhurst, two fire appliances from Romsey and three fire appliances from St Mary’s Fire Station.  The multi-role vehicle from Eastleigh Fire Station and the incident command unit from Service Headquarters were also in attendance.

Group Manager Dan Tasker said:  “Upon arrival I could see flames above the roof of the building. Firefighters gained access to the premises using specialist cutting equipment and crews ventilated the premises. The blaze was tackled using a combination of dowsing the flames from above with the aerial ladder platform monitor and traditional methods on the ground.

He continued: “Crews used the thermal imaging camera to check for further pockets of fire and the spread of smoke. Firefighters worked extremely hard to contain the fire to the unit of origin and did a sterling job in stopping the fire from spreading to the neighbouring two units. Due to their efforts there should be no adverse impact to the rest of the industrial estate.”

A fire investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
