Police Officer Injured In Hit And Run

A police officer survived with minor injuries after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run crash.

The driver of the car carried out a manoeuvre before driving at slow speed towards the officer who beckoned it to stop.

The policeman - who was wearing high-visibility clothing - was then struck by the car, the collision causing him to be lifted on to the bonnet.

The hit-and-run happened in Park Walk, Southampton, Hampshire, at 2.25am Sunday 27th Feb 2011.

The car - believed to be a small hatchback - then turned right in New Road and drove a short distance with the officer still on the bonnet.

He eventually fell off onto the road and the car sped off, leaving the policeman lying in the road, a Hampshire Police spokesman said.

He said: "The officer was fortunate to suffer only minor injuries from the fall."

The car was later found abandoned near Charlotte Place roundabout.

Police believe there were four people inside the car and appealed for anyone with information to call Shirley CID or Crimestoppers.
