A man who died after the horse pulling the trap he was travelling in bolted, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle, has been named by police.

Terrence Eastman, 52, was travelling with a 40-year-old woman in the trap along Hambledon Road, near Clanfield on Sunday August the 14th when the horse became agitated, according to police.

Mr Eastman, from Lovedean Lane, Waterlooville, died in Southampton General Hospital.

A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said:

''The woman got out of the trap in order to calm the animal, however the horse became more distressed and bolted, dragging Mr Eastman in the trap with it.

''The trap then collided with a road sign and Mr Eastman was thrown into the road. He suffered fatal injuries and died later in hospital.''

The woman, from Liss in Hampshire, was shaken but uninjured and the horse was unharmed.

The spokeswoman added: ''Officers are particularly keen to speak to the driver of a yellow Mini which was travelling through the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident.''
