A driver's been arrested after a motorcyclist died in a collision with a car in Southampton.

At around 5.30pm on Thursday 30 May, a blue Kawasaki motorcycle was in collision with a grey Vauxhall Astra on Shirley Road near the junction with Cawte Road.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Astra driver, a 27-year-old man, was uninjured. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in custody.

Roads closures and diversions were in place on Shirley High Street for approximately three hours to allow police to recover the vehicles and investigate the scene.

Sergeant Richard Grant from the Totton Roads Policing unit said:

"This is a very serious collision that has resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.

"I would like to thank people in the local community for their patience while we investigated the scene which required us to have the road closed for approximately three hours. We re-opened it as soon as possible.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or either of the vehicles prior to it, to contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Grant at the Totton Roads Policing  unit, quoting Operation Tollbar, on 101, or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
