Funding For Hayling Ferry To Be Kept

Portsmouth City Council have decided not to stop funding a ferry service used by schoolchildren and commuters.
The Hayling Ferry, for foot passengers and cyclists goes across the harbour to Portsmouth and is also used by people visiting the sandy beaches.
It gets £15,000 a year from the Council towards its running costs - which councillors were considering withdrawing. It was just one of the ideas they were looking at at a big council meeting today (Tuesday 8th February) to discuss possible cutbacks to save money.
Cllr Jason Fazackarley from Portsmouth City Council said:
“It [the ferry] is saved, I have removed this [the proposed cut] as an offered saving by officers so Portsmouth contribution towards the ferry operation will remain unchanged. I cannot speak for any changes that the County Council may decide to make but Portsmouth City Council will NOT be making any cut to the subsidy.”
Campaigners were worried without the funding the crossing will probably have to be scrapped. They argued the service provides vital access to residents of Portsmouth, because Hayling is one of the few rural areas that is accessible to them without needing a car.
