An international campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse is being highlighted in Winchester.

On Monday 25 November, the Winchester Domestic Violence and Abuse Forum will be available in the city centre from 10 am until 4 pm.

They are asking people to support the campaign by wearing a white ribbon and pledging never to commit, condone or remain silent about domestic abuse.

Ann Craig, Chair of Winchester Domestic Violence Forum, commented:

"Alarmingly in 90% of cases domestic violence and abuse, children are in the same or next room when violence occurs. This can have an effect on their lives with an increased risk of many of them becoming abused or abusers themselves. If not supported, sufferers from domestic violence and abuse can develop problems related to their mental wellbeing, drug and alcohol abuse."

She continued:

"Abuse may not just be physical. Victims of violence and abuse need to have the assurance that they can report this and action will be taken to keep them safe."

One in four women and one in six men experiences domestic abuse at some point in their lives.

Domestic violence and abuse is a reality to people within the Winchester District as in all areas of the country.

Anyone can experience domestic abuse, regardless of age, race, sex, income or lifestyle and it can occur across all sections of society.

Domestic abuse is far more common than people think and in the UK, the police receive one call in relation to domestic abuse every minute of every day.
