Conmen Steal Cash From Grandmother

Detectives are appealing for information after a 73-year-old Hamble grandmother fell victim to a bogus caller.

A man knocked at her door in Coach Road claiming to be a water company official on Tuesday, December 13. He managed to con his way in sometime between 1pm and 2.45pm.

While he was in the property checking her taps she became aware a second man was in her lounge. He managed to steal a quantity of cash the victim had put aside to buy presents for her grandchildren.

The man who knocked at her door is described as: White, aged in his 50s, wearing black clothing and a black hat with flaps over the ears. He had blond hair that could be seen underneath the hat.

Police are investigating whether this is linked to any other incidents in the area and are asking for anyone with information about the crime to contact them.

They would like anyone who saw someone acting suspiciously in the area on Tuesday or thinks they may have had the man at their door to contact Detective Constable Scott Spafford at Eastleigh CID.

DC Spafford said: "This crime has left the victim clearly upset about what happened to her and the theft of money she had put aside for her grandchildren this Christmas."

"If you have unusual callers to your door I would urge you to please check the identity of them. Genuine callers will happily provide identification if requested to do so and if they say they are from a utility company and you are still concerned you can always call the firm to double check."

Those with information can call DC Spafford at Eastleigh CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
