Human remains have been discovered by builders digging the foundations for a new school sports hall.

Police were called to the construction site in the Harbour School grounds in Tipner Lane, Portsmouth, at 10.20am on Friday 27th May.

The remains were thought to be more than 100 years old, a police spokesman said.

He added: "Officers sought expert advice and an examination has concluded the bones are most likely those of a man in his 50s and are believed to be more than a century old.

"Hampshire Constabulary will retain the bones and notify the coroner.''

Detective Inspector Mark Tutton, from Portsmouth CID, said: "We are satisfied that due to the age of the bones there are no suspicious circumstances to investigate.''
