A £1.5million project to stop the A27 near Chichester flooding in bad weather starts today (26th November).
It was left underwater during the storms back in the summer.
The project will finish in February and there will be narrow lanes and some overnight closures while it's carried out.
The work involves repairing, replacing and installing drainage equipment between the Portfield and Fishbourne roundabouts.
Anita Waterton, Highways Agency Project Sponsor said:
''Drainage on this section of the A27 needs to be upgraded so it can better cope with heavy rainfall. By improving the drainage we will reduce the likelihood of emergency closures in the future.
To carry out the work safely we will need to have narrow lanes on part of the A27, and some overnight closures to install and remove those, and we will need to temporarily close some lay-bys.''
The road restrictions will be removed over Christmas period.
Narrow lanes will be used during the day to allow two lanes to remain open to traffic in both directions. There will be a number of overnight closures to install and remove the narrow lanes; these are currently planned for Monday 26, Tuesday 27 November, Thursday 20 December, Thursday 3, Friday 4, Saturday 5 January, Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February. Overnight, throughout the scheme, one lane will be closed in both directions.
