A cyclist pinned the boy to the ground because he thought he had yelled at him at Riverside Park in Bitterne.
It happened between 5.30 and 6pm on Tuesday June 3.
The 10-year-old boy was playing with friends and was shouting to them when a cyclist rode by.
The youngster has told police that the cyclist seemed to think he was shouting at him.
The man approached the boy, grabbed him and pinned him to the ground. He shouted at the boy and then cycled off.
The boy suffered bruising in the assault.
The cyclist is described as:
In his 30s,
Average to large build,
Wearing a black cycle helmet with a luminous green flat hat underneath; luminous green gloves; black jacket; black trousers and a big black rucksack on his back.
His bike had a green light on the back and a white light on the front.
PC Dale Douglas who is investigating said:
“The area was quite busy at the time and we feel certain that there are more witnesses to speak to. The description of the man is a good one-do you know who he is? Or is this you? Please contact us with any information.”
