Detectives have launched an investigation after a man was violently assaulted on a train.

The incident happened shortly before 5pm on the 4.44pm ScotRail service between Hamilton West and Glasgow Central station on Wednesday.

British Transport Police say the two suspects boarded the train at Hamilton West and made a loud anti-social comment towards another passenger.

The victim, a 49-year-old man, glanced over and was approached by the pair. They began punching his head and spat at him.

The two suspects then left the service at Blantyre. Police described them as as aged 15 to 16 and wearing similar light green tracksuits.

Detective Sergeant Dougie Gallacher said: "This was a seemingly unprovoked assault and we are working tirelessly to identify those responsible.

"As you would expect, this was a frightening experience for this victim, who required hospital treatment for his facial injuries.

"If you were on board this service and witnessed what happened, I would encourage you to get in touch with officers immediately.''
