Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a teenage girl was sexually assaulted in the Blairdardie area of Glasgow.

The 14 year old was walking on a canal path near Blairdardie Road when she was approached from behind by a man.

He threatened her before the assault, but she managed to escape.

Police only found out after she told teachers at school on Monday.

The suspect is described as white with a stocky build and a ruddy complexion.

He was wearing an old style, knee length, duffle coat with the hood up.

Detective Inspector Gillian Patrick said: "This was a terrifying experience for the victim who has been left badly shaken by what happened.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the surrounding area around the time of the attack to think back to whether they saw anything suspicious or noticed a man matching the description.

"This would appear to be an isolated incident and additional patrols have been put in place to provide reassurance to the community as officers continue to conduct enquiries locally."
