The father of murdered student Karen Buckley has collected a posthumous degree from the university she attended.

Ms Buckley, 24, was studying occupational therapy at Glasgow Caledonian University when she was killed by Alexander Pacteau during a night out in the city's west end last April.

She had moved to Glasgow from Cork, Ireland, to study.

Pacteau, 21, bludgeoned the student to death with a spanner and then tried to dispose of her body in a vat of chemicals.

He was sentenced to spend at least 23 years in prison after admitting her murder last September.

Ms Buckley's posthumous honour was accepted by her father John, who collected the award during an emotional ceremony.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow Caledonian University said: "During GCU's winter graduation ceremonies, Karen Buckley was awarded a posthumous master of science in occupational therapy.

"Her family have asked that her achievements can be celebrated privately.''
