Details have been unveiled of the some of the hundreds of music, theatre and dance performances that will celebrate culture at the Glasgow 2014 Games.

The newly-refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand will host comedy shows and screen Scottish film classics, while Malawi's Lake of Stars festival will be one of the highlights of the planned ``Urban Party'' at Glasgow Green.

As well as watching live coverage of the sporting action, visitors to the city park will be able to hear artists from across the Commonwealth, get involved in arts activities and try Scottish produce at the food village.

The Merchant City Festival, an annual showcase of Scottish and International street theatre, has also been expanded to 11 days during the Games.

Organisers of Festival 2014 say more than 1,000 performances will take place in city theatres, in parks and streets and on the routes to and from the Commonwealth Games venues.

Eileen Gallagher, an independent director on the Glasgow 2014 board, said: ''Festival 2014 will be an amazing celebration of culture which is woven into the fabric of the Commonwealth Games experience.

''No matter where you are in Glasgow during the Games, you will be able to access performances and events involving some of the best home-grown and Commonwealth talent.''

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: ''Festival 2014 events will be taking place on riverbanks and roof-tops, community centres, parks, art galleries and even an ice-cream van. I would encourage everyone to join in, be inspired, enjoy yourself and celebrate this special year.''
