An eight-year-old boy has died after a crash involving a car and a lorry.

The child was a passenger in a Ford Focus travelling on the A92 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on Monday when the collision happened north of the Redhouse roundabout.

The car driver, a 36-year-old woman, was critically injured and a nine-year-old boy seriously hurt in the incident just before 3pm.

Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: "Tragically this collision has resulted in the death of a young boy while the driver and another child also sustained very serious injuries.

"We are still trying to establish exactly what happened and I would ask any motorists who were on the A92 on Monday afternoon and who witnessed this incident to contact police immediately.''

Police said the driver of the Iveco lorry and his passenger were not injured in the crash which closed the route for seven hours.

The woman was taken to Victoria Hospital where her condition is described as critical while her nine-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries to his face.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers 101.
