Our charity, Help a Capital Child, was set up in 1975 to help disadvantaged young people in our local areas. We support children and young people affected by abuse, homelessness, disability, poverty and illness.
This year in Scotland we’re focusing our support on illness and the money that you help us to raise will fund specialist hospital units and care for young people with cancer.
Every year our celebrity friends queue up to join our presenters and take over Capital FM for the Help a Capital Child appeal. This programme of star-studded shows features incredible money-can’t-buy auction lots and opportunities for you to show your support. This year’s appeal will take place from Friday 14th October and Sunday 16th October and the money that you help us raise will fund specialist hospital units and care for young people with cancer.
When you’re a teenager, life should be all about hanging out with your mates, going to gigs and experiencing whatever life has to offer for the first time. But for six teenagers a day, life changes overnight when they are told they have cancer. Usually placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, young people often feel isolated when they have cancer, never meeting anyone else going through the same thing.
This is why we’ll be helping to a new unit at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and care for young people at units in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill) and Beaston West Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow. Together, these three units will have over 1,000 patient stays a year. We want to help make sure that cancer doesn’t stop these teenagers in their tracks and that they are given the best possible quality of life and chances of survival.
