Harry and Meghan have attended a garden party as part of celebrations for Prince Charles's 70th birthday - in the couple's first official outing since the royal wedding.

In the grounds of Buckingham Palace, the newly-appointed Duke of Sussex described how his father's efforts championing causes like heritage and vulnerable young people had inspired him and his brother, Prince William.

It is Harry and Meghan's first royal duty as husband and wife after they were married in a ceremony at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday.

Harry began his speech at the palace by remembering those "affected by the tragic events at the Manchester Arena a year ago".

The first anniversary of the deadly bombing was marked by a memorial service earlier on Tuesday at Manchester Cathedral.

Harry also paid a moving tribute to his father for his charitable work over more than four decades.

The prince said: "It is your selfless drive to affect change, whether that is to improve the lives of those who are on the wrong path, to save an important piece of our national heritage or to protect a particular species under threat, which William and I draw inspiration from every day."

At one point, when a bee buzzed nearby, he fluffed his lines, prompting his bride and the Duchess of Cornwall to break into laughter.

Meghan wore a dusky pink Flavia silk-crepe pencil dress from Goat, a make that the Duchess of Cambridge has been spotted wearing before.

The dress by the British brand is officially priced at £590.

Goat told Sky News that the outfit had been tailored to perfectly fit the duchess.

The hat is understood to be a Philip Treacy dome hat made from sinamay that was custom made for Meghan.

The price is described as being available on request.

Again, the make has been frequently warn by Meghan and Kate.

The firm's website crashed shortly after the photos of the new duchess emerged.

Harry was wearing traditional morning dress, with top hat and ecru waistcoat and mid blue tie.

Guests at the garden party ranged from representatives from Age UK, the British Film Institute and the Gurkha Welfare Trust to the Parachute Regimental Association, the Royal Ballet and the Royal Canadian Dragoons - all with a close association with Charles.

Harry ended his speech by saying to his father: "You have inspired William and I, and looking out here today, it is clear to see that we are not alone."

Corporal Gregory Gilbert, from 2nd Battalion, Irish Regiment of Canada, which has Charles as its colonel-in-chief, said meeting Harry and Meghan was "wonderful" after he and his colleagues flew over for the party.

The wife of another Canadian soldier, Janine Killen, also spoke to Meghan about Toronto where Meghan had filmed Suits.

Ms Killen said: "I always thought the royals were from far, far away but they are very down to earth.

"They can meet anybody, anywhere and have the right words to say."

It comes as Meghan's father Thomas Markle was spotted for the first time since missing his daughter's wedding to undergo heart surgery.

The 73-year-old was pictured buying frapuccinos from a coffee shop in Rosarito, Mexico.

In the images, he is carrying a plastic bag which appears to have the words "personal belongings" on the side and could be from a hospital.

Meghan's half-sister Samantha Grant, who now goes by the name of Samantha Markle, called on her sister to heal a rift in their family.

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, was the only member of her family to attend her wedding to Prince Harry.

Ms Markle's relationship with her duchess sister has been rocky, and she has written a book about their childhood, which she called The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister.
