England fans can now start planning for a World Cup in a country which promises tight security and potential visa-free travel.

Supporters with tickets must apply for FAN ID, a Russian identity card, which prevents the need for any travel visa.

FAN ID is only available for ticket holders and will guarantee free travel between host cities on special trains and other public transport.

Russia 2018 will be a unique World Cup experience; one venue, Kaliningrad, is located between Poland and Lithuania and completely separate from the rest of the country.

The Football Association will only confirm England's base after the draw on December 1.

Organisers are hopeful of a trouble-free tournament, following a successful Confederations Cup this summer.

"The level at which the tournament was organised dispelled many fears and stereotypes," Alexey Sorokin, Russia 2018's organising committee chief executive, told Sky Sports News in July.

"Many people didn't expect it to be this way; such great food, interesting museums, such history. People would like to come back, that's a fact."
