Capital takes a look at some of the most emotional pop songs of the past few years when pop seems to imitate life and echo what has been happening in the personal lives of the singers recording them.
Jessie J's empowerment anthem for all those who've ever been bullied was a big chart hit back in summer 2011. The track sees her looking back on everyone who had doubted her growing up and telling them simply 'Who's laughing now?'.
Adele's 2011 single 'Someone Like You' is one of the most emotional songs from her album '21' and is about the same broken relationship much of the record is about The song tells of Adele's sadness after finding out her ex-boyfriend had become engaged to someone else just a couple of months after their break-up, and Adele has often spoken about how difficult the song was for her to write.
Britney's worldwide 2007 hit 'Piece Of Me' was an aimed attack from the pop princess to all of the paparazzi and media outlets that had been focusing on her personal life for the past few years. The song references Britney's teen pop days, her legal troubles in recent years and the tabloid press' fixation on her weight. Britney dares the media to come and get "a piece of me" while the video also takes several stabs at the press.
Dappy's debut solo single is an honest song which sees the N-Dubz rapper talking about his past and saying he has 'no regrets' about his life so far. The single is an affirming song which perfectly shows off the 'Rockstar' rapper's optimism as he looks forward to the "best of days".
Professor Green's Vodafone Big Top 40 number one single 'Read All About It' is a highly emotional song that sees the UK rapper opening up about his childhood and upbringing. Pro Green openly speaks about his late father and the things he has learned from his younger days and his parents. The song's chorus, sung by Emeli Sande, goads the media into writing what they want about the 'Remedy' rapper's personal life.
Taylor Swift's huge 2012 single 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' is pretty clear in its message to one of the country pop singer's ex-boyfriends. The song follows a former couple constantly breaking up and getting back together, until one of them finally says it's over for good. Taylor has yet to confirm which of her former relationships the song is about, although media speculation has suggested it could be about 'Your Body Is A Wonderland' singer John Mayer.
Katy Perry says her single 'Part Of Me' was penned back in 2010, long before her split from husband Russell Brand. However the song's emotional lyrical content, which tells of a particularly difficult break-up and the feelings of resentment and independence that follow, make it's release shortly after the end of Katy's marriage to the British comedian uncannily relevant to the 'Teenage Dream' personal life at the time.
Katy's 2011 single 'E.T.' is believed to be about her romance with Russell Brand, after the two met and were married back in 2010. The 'Firework' singer talks about a "hypnotising" man and someone from a "different dimension". Could she be referring to the Rock of Ages star?
After his wife Beyonce gave birth to the couple's first child Blue Ivy back at the start of 2012, Jay-Z wasted no time heading into the recording studio to open up about becoming a first time father. The emotional track tells the US rapper's daughter she is his "greatest creation" and was posted online just two days after Blue Ivy's birth.
Jessie J has credited writing the titular track from her 2011 debut as helping to save her life at a time when she was ready to give up on music. The song 'Who You Are' has become one of Jessie's signature tracks, as it tells people "it's OK not to be OK". The 'Domino star says she wrote the song at a time when she was feeling really lost, and hopes it can now help other people to feel better about themselves.
UK four-piece Lawson's debut single was eventually revealed to have been penned by singer Andy Brown about his break-up with The Saturdays singer Mollie King. The couple dated in the past and Andy says 'When She Was Mine' is one of several songs by the band about that break-up, although he says Mollie is totally fine with Lawson releasing the song and is actually a big fan of it.
Lady Gaga's 2011 power ballad 'The Edge Of Glory' is an emotional song for the singer, having been penned around the time her late grandfather passed away. The 'Born This Way' singer says she was inspired to write the song afte realising her grandfather had been a "champion in life", and sharing a moment with her father where they drank tequila and composed the song at a piano.
Justin's embittered pop hit 'Cry Me A River' was originally released back on 2002 and speculation was soon rife that it was about his failed relationship with pop singer Britney Spears. The 'Sexyback' star refused to comment on the rumours until 2011 when he confirmed the song was indeed recorded shortly after an argument between himself and Britney.
Pink's tongue in cheek hit 'So What' offered a light hearted approach to a very real situation, as the singer was separated from husband Corey Hart at the time. While referring to him as a "tool" and making fun of the motorcross rider, the couple were clearly still on good terms as Corey appeared in the 'So What' video, and the couple are now back together.
Adele's ultimate break-up song 'Rolling In The Deep' has gone on to be a massive hit around the world, and sees the singer finally telling her boyfriend that their relationship is over. Adele has previously said she wrote it as a diss to the man in question and the song's lyrics show her standing up to him and declaring "we could have had it all".
