Strip That Down Liam Payne feat. Quavo Download 'Strip That Down' on iTunes
From Justin Timberlake to Eminem. Daft Punk to Beyonce. 2013 saw some pretty huge comebacks. Take a look at the following ten and decide who you think should be crowned the King or Queen of 2013.
It was seven years ago when Justin released his last studio album. Throughout that time he was inundated with questions about whether he would make a return to music. He had forged a successful acting career and looked like stepping back into the studio was something he wasn't even close to thinking about. At the start of the year he teased a major announcement and posted footage from the studio with a simple "I'm ready." Then came 'Suit & Tie', 'Mirrors' and his new album 'The 20/20 Experience'. He also started the year with huge comeback performances at the Grammys and BRITs. Not content with releasing one album in 2013, he brought out 'The 20/20 Experience 2 Of 2' - which featured 'Take Back The Night' and 'TKO'. He ended the year with some big awards under his belt. He received special recognition at the VMAs and also won big at the AMAs. Not only that, but toured in the summer with Jay-Z and is currently out on the road on his own solo adventure. 2014 looks equally busy as he prepares to bring the jaunt over to the UK.
When you start the year performing at the halftime show of the Super Bowl, it's difficult to top that. 2013 was filled with talk of Beyonce's new album. She released teaser tracks for her Pepsi and H&M commercials and announced a huge tour called 'The Mrs. Carter Show'. Fans still waited on news of that new album but it never came. She did however head out on the road and proved why she is still one of the most important live performers of her time. Fast forward to December and she delivered a huge surprise. The world awoke to discover a new Beyonce album complete with a massive 17 new videos to accompany it. It shut down the Internet. The music world went mad, fans went wild and she scored the fastest ever selling album on iTunes. Get ready for more in 2014 as she heads back out on tour and who knows, could there even be more new music?
The rapper started the year helping out his pal Justin Timberlake on 'Suit & Tie' and performing at the Grammys. He also picked up some awards at the ceremony for his 'Watch The Throne' album. Talk quickly turned to his next solo effort. It was during the NBA Finals in June that a Samsung advert played. In it Jay-Z revealed his new album. Not only that, but he was offering it exclusively to anyone who had the phone and it would be free! Then the rest of the world got their hands on the record and we discovered another team-up with JT on 'Holy Grail'. The record set the precedent for the album and we also saw some more artistic elements from the rapper. He performed 'Picasso Baby' for six hours in a New York museum and also went to visit the real Magna Carter. He also supported wife Beyonce at the Chime For Change concert, toured in the summer with Justin and headed out on his own solo venture. Oh yeh, he also popped along on the Tube with Timbaland and Chris Martin after his own gig at the O2 Arena. *and breathe*
Yeeeeeeeeeeeah! Fans had been eagerly awaiting second studio album 'Demonstration' for months and months, and Tinie wanted to get it just right. How would he top the success of 'Pass Out' and 'Written In The Stars'? Well the answer was by teaming up with Diplo on the huge 'Trampoline'. There was also one of the most-talked about sets at the iTunes Festival in September as well as new the anthemic 'Children Of The Sun' with John Martin. His set at the Jingle Bell Ball in December also cemented his return and gives a strong indication that fans heading to see him in tour in 2014 are going to be in for something truly special.
2013 was many people's first ever experience of Robin as he became a household name thanks to 'Blurred Lines'. He had tasted some success in Europe and outside the US with 'Lost Without You' but couldn't have expected what was to come with his Pharrell and T.I. collaboration. It became the biggest selling song of the year and hit number one in 14 countries. He was also the man on everyone's lips thanks to a Twerking special performance of the track alongside Miley Cyrus at the MTV VMAs. He also performed well with follow-up single 'Give It 2 U' - albeit not quite the dizzying heights of 'Blurred Lines'. He made his debut at the iTunes Festival, teamed up with Jessie J and will tour the US with the 'Price Tag' singer next year.
It would be hard to mention 2013 and not utter the words 'Twerking' or Miley Cyrus. She's been the talk of the year after going on a mission to ditch her Hannah Montana image and grow into a new artist. There's been controversy after controversy as well over the past twelve months. Her music videos have pushed boundaries and broken records. Her live performances have shocked and made worldwide news. She's even been seen smoking on stage at the EMAs as well as winning awards. With a tour just around the corner, it looks like there's even more to come from Miley Cyrus.
He's a global icon. One of the most successful rappers of all time. He's also had one of his biggest years in his career. Early in the year there were the first teasers of when he might be dropping his eagerly awaited new album. With a headline slot at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, many thought summer would bring that record. It did come however, a few months later with first taster 'Survival' – which featured on a trailer for a new Call Of Duty video game. It was then the turn of 'Berzerk'. Throw in arguably one of his fiercest raps ever in 'Rap God' and suddenly it was like 1999 all over again. He was dominating the iTunes Charts and then the award shows. He picked up the Global Icon prize at the EMAs and also made a stand-out appearance at the first ever YouTube Awards - scooping artist of the year. 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' was more than a sequel - it was a statement that this rapper is well and truly back, and here to stay!
It's Britney B*itch! Well, she ended 2012 on a high note after teaming up with Will.i.am for his track 'Scream And Shout'. Fast-forward to 2013 and she was back with a killer new remix of the song featuring an all-star cast of rappers. She then joined forces with the Smurfs as she provided the soundtrack to the movie sequel on her song 'Ooh La La'. After fans got their taste of her first solo work in two years all talk turned to her new album. Will.i.am had been teasing it all year, we knew William Orbit was involved and then we got it…. 'Work Bitch'. Britney then stopped by to give us the title of new album 'Britney Jean' and she ends 2013 with new single 'Perfume'. Oh, on top of all that, she has signed up for a huge residency in Las Vegas. Viva Las Britney Spears we say!
Will they, won't they? That was the question on everyone's lips when Beyonce was confirmed to be performing at the NFL Super Bowl halftime show. Michelle and Kelly had kept fairly quiet on the reports, but then came the moment. The pair rose to the stage to run through a medley of their biggest hits during the show. It was the first time they had been on stage together since 2006. They then treated fans to a new compilation album of Love Songs – which included new track 'Nuclear'. Safe to say, Bruno Mars has got his work cut out to top this Super Bowl moment when he performs in 2014.
Few can argue that 'Get Lucky' wasn't the song of 2013? It was everything the music world needed and more. It was also the first track from new album 'Random Acccess Memories' – their hugely anticipated follow-up to 2005's 'Human After All'. And how do you end a triumphant return? By grabbing four Grammy nods and then revealing you will make your televised performance since 2008 at the ceremony! 2014, we look forward to seeing what you and Daft Punk can do together.
It couldn't happen...no way....they've always said no! This is exactly what we were all telling ourselves before the MTV VMAs 2013 when the rumour mill went into overdrive that an 'N Sync reunion was planned. Justin Timberlake was picking up a special Vanguard award and also performing a career medley of songs. So, he started his set - all brilliant as always - and then he said "You asked for it!". It was then the reunion of all reunions as Joey, Lance, JC and Chris joined Justin to perform a medley of their biggest songs. It was only a Twerking performance from Robin Thicke and Miley that robbed the headlines but 2013 will now be known as the year anything could happen!
