A man who was trampled by cows in County Durham and nearly died is now stable in hospital.

The 46 year old man suffered a fractured skull and chest injuries in the incident, which happened at around lunchtime yesterday.

Air ambulance paramedic Jane Peacock, who responded to the call near Barnard Castle, County Durham, said: “He and his wife were just walking on a public footpath when they were attacked by cows.

“He climbed over a stile on to the other side of the stone wall, then he just collapsed.

“How he's got out alive, I do not know.”

The man, from Halifax, West Yorkshire, was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he was described as “stable” today by an air ambulance spokesman.
