An 18-year-old man has died following a crash on the A66 after his car left the road and collided with a barrier.

The driver, from the Darlington area, was driving between Darlington and Middlesbrough at 12.15am this morning in a silver Hyundai Getz on the westbound carriageway.

The car left the road and collided with a nearside barrier near the Long Newton junction.

Firecrews from Darlington and Cleveland brigades extracted the man from the vehicle and he was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by ambulance where he later died.

Police say it was a single-vehicle accident.

Anyone who saw the car prior to the collision or witnessed the incident should call the Cleveland and Durham specialist operation unit on 101.
